2007-2008 News Archive June 8, 2008 The 2007-08 SIMC school year session has now officially ended with an end of the party yesterday, so there are now a few notes in order. Firstly, a big thank you to all the everyone who has contributed their time, effort, or money to the circle. Next, a thank-you to the Student Leader Group for running the classes and activites. We will be saying good-bye to four of its members (Qiaochu, Andrew C., Richard, and Meir) who will be heading off to college next year. Congratulations to Yuta Kato, who won the award for the highest attendance rate in the Student Leader Group! Also, please thank Lon-Chan Chu from the Advisory Committee for volunteering to take over coordinating the circle, as Joy will be heading off to Phillips Exeter Academy next year. June 7, 2008 Congratulations to all the winners of SIMC's Who Wants to be a Mathematician competition! Khoi Nguyen and Albert Chu won the first round, Kevin Liu and Charles Lu won the second round, and Qui Nguyen and Brian Li won the third round. Also, Charles Lu won the individual round. Thanks to everyone for a successful year! Here are the questions from the competition. June 4, 2008 Thank you to everyone who has contributed their time and effort to SIMC! We will be holding our final class for the 2007-08 school year on Saturday, June 7 from 1:30-3:30PM. (this will combine the middle/elementary and high school classes). During this final class, we will take the chance to say thank you and good-bye to all the departing seniors from the Student Leader Group. Also, we will be running a game-show variation on the Mathematics Association of America's "Who Wants to Be a Mathematician," with prizes awarded to the top finishers. Please e-mail info@simathcircle.org if you are planning on participating so that we are able to calculate how many questions and prizes to prepare. May 9, 2008 Congratulations to Darryl Wu, a member of SIMC, for becoming the 2008 MathCounts Nationals Champion! Another congratulations goes out to the Washington MathCounts team, of which Darryl Wu, Yota Kato, and Kathleen Zhou, as well as their coach Lon-Chan Chu are member of SIMC, for their second place finish. April 14, 2008SIMC is happy to announce that Chuck Doran will be giving a guest lecture on Saturday, May, 10th from 1:30-3:30 PM about string theory and mathematics.
There will also be no regular classes on that day. The biography/topic have now been posted here. Please note that there will be no classes, either high school or middle/elementary school, this Saturday, the 19th due to the Blaine Math Competition. March 15, 2008 SIMC is excited to note that a number of our members did a great job in the MathCounts State competition earlier today! Darryl Wu took first, Yota Kato (also in the Student Leader Group) took second, and Kathleen Zhou took third. All three will be representing Washington State at MathCounts Nationals in Denver this coming May. Emily Zhang, Albert Chu, Sophia Xu also made it into the Countdown Round. In addition, Lon-Chan Chu (currently on the advisory committee) coached the winning team from Odle Middle School, all of whom are SIMC members. They are Kathleen Zhou, Emily Zhang, Albert Chu, and Pei Tao. Congratulations!!! March 5, 2008 SIMC is happy to announce that we will be giving out prizes to the top finishers in MathCounts State as follows (in Amazon gift cards): 1st Place: $50 2-4th Places: $20 Team Coach:$50
Also, there will be no classes on both Saturday, March 15 and Saturday, March 22 due to MathCounts State and Mu Alpha Theta State. December 30, 2007 SIMC is happy to announce that Nathan Pflueger will be giving a guest lecture on Saturday, January 5th from 12:30-1:30PM about rearranging summation.
There will also be normal classes for elementary/middle and high school on that day at the normal times. The topic and biography have now been posted. Also, there will be no classes on January 26th due to "Math is Cool" Masters (applying to Elementary/Middle and High School classes). There will be no classes on December 22nd or December 29 for winter break. Classes will resume on January 5th. December 3, 2007 Meir Lakhovsky has now joined the Student Leader Group and will be helping to teach the high school class. You can find his biography up here. November 14, 2007 SIMC is pleased to announce that Chris Jeuell and Dipankar Ray will be giving guest lectures on December 8 and December 15th, repectively. Chris Jeuell will give a lecture on mass points from 1:30-3:30PM. Dipankar Ray will give a lecture on cardinality from 1:30-3:00 PM. Please note that there will be no regular classes on those days. November 11, 2007 After a Student Leader Group meeting on November 10, we have decided the merge the elementary and middle school classes. This combined class will take place from 2:00-3:30PM on Saturdays. November 5, 2007 The 3rd Quarter financial statements are up. We really appreciate everyone's donations. November 3, 2007 No class today SIMC is happy to announce that Chris Jeuell will be gving a lecture on proof by induction on Sunday, October 21 from 1-3PM. October 2, 2007 Puzzle #3 is up here! Can you complete the sets? October 1, 2007 The school year schedule is finally up! September 2, 2007 Congratulations to Kathleen Zhou (6-8th Grade Division) and Brandon Wong (5th Grade Division) for winning the Countdown Round on Saturday! The runner-up for the middle school was Helen Yu, and the semi-finalists were Sophia Xu and Kevin Liu. The runner-up for the 5th Grade Division was Robert Zhang. Ben Keller and Emily Zhang won for the logic puzzle. Thanks to all for a great summer! Registration for school year classes has started. Our school year schedule will go up shortly. Do you know what it means? Click here to submit your answer. June 19, 2007 SIMC is now been approved by the Art of Problem Solving Foundation Board as a local organization under the foundation. June 12, 2007 The website is now officially up and running, although construction is not anticipated to be finished until August. |
